  46. 2) What's new in Version 1.0b?

  49. - Photoshop 4.0 compatible!
  50.   This means, PM scans subdirectories of your plugin directory for
  51.   filters on startup. 
  52.   Note: Only the first subdirectory level is scanned!
  53.   e.g. "c:\plugins\alienskin\" will be scanned
  54.        "c:\plugins\alienskin\others\" will NOT be scanned
  55.   I don't have Photoshop 4.0 and don't know how PS behaves on this point

  57. - You can launch Photoshop from within Plugin Manager

  74. Extract all ZIP content in a directory of your choice. If you create 
  75. a shortcut to the executable, make sure you type the correct working
  76. directory. Otherwise you will get a warning message on startup and you
  77. can't save ff plugins (error message: "template.bin not found")
  78.  
  79. On startup, the Plugin Manager will register a new shell file type 
  80. '.pmf' - this is the extension for filter setups you create on "Save"
  81. or "Save As".

  97. 5) Why do I need a plugin manager?
  98. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

  100. If you have MANY plugins, you will notice, that some of them are not
  101. listed in the Photoshop menu the more it gets filled up. They are still
  102. there, but you can't see them because Photoshop is not able to add more
  103. menu entries.
  104.  
  105. The Plugin Manager will help you to enable or disable plugins, which
  106. means that some plugins will renamed, so that Photoshop won't find them
  107. on startup.

  111. 6) How does it work?
  112. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

  114. The Plugin Manager will change the *.8bf file extension to read *._bf
  115. which effectively disables the plugin so Photoshop can't find the file
  116. and load it.

  120. 7) How about Filter Factory plugins?
  121. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

  123. The Plugin Manager will let you reorganize Filter Factory plugins by
  124. allowing you to:
  125.  
  126. 1. Rename the Filter menu name that shows up in the Filter menu.
  127.  
  128. 2. Rename the filename itself of the filter so it becomes easier to 
  129.    manage and to avoid duplicate filenames.
  130.  
  131. 3. Move the Filter to another existing menu category, or you can create
  132.    a whole new menu category.
  133.  
  134. 4. Sort out those unknown ones or less used ones by disabling the 
  135.    Filter.
  136.  
  137. The buttons at the bottom of the Plugin Manager dialog box are used to
  138. reorganize the filters. Under the Category window is New and Rename.
  139. Selecting New will bring up a small box where you can type in your new
  140. Category name of your choosing. Selecting Rename will allow you to 
  141. change the name of an existing category.
  142.  
  143. Under the Plugins window are 'Move To...', 'Enable' and 'Disable'. When
  144. you highlight a plugin listed, select 'Move To' and a dialog box 
  145. containing categories listed in the Category window will be displayed.
  146. Some proprietary categories may not be shown, such as KPT or Photoshop's
  147. built in filters in version 4.  Pick a category to move the plugin to,
  148. and choose OK. You can also do batch changes by selecting all plugins 
  149. shown and choosing a single category for them to be moved to.
  150. Choosing 'Disable' will change the '8bf' extension to '_bf' and 'Enable'
  151. will change it back. Photoshop on startup will ignore the '_bf' 
  152. extension and not load the filter.  Using 'Enable' and 'Disable' will
  153. work on all filters.

  155. When you are satisfied with your "filter setup", you can save this setup
  156. to '.pmf' files, where the filename, title, category and state 
  157. (enabled/disbled) are stored in by choosing File>Save or Save As and 
  158. naming the *.PMF filter information file.
  159.  
  160. NOTE: Plugin Manager has not modified your plugin directory at this 
  161. step. To have your setup take effect, you have to press the "!"-button,
  162. or choose the entry "Apply Changes" in the "Plugin" menu. A warning 
  163. message box will appear to inform you that your plugins are to be 
  164. physically changed (you can change this behaviour in the "preferences"
  165. dialog).

  167. By choosing Extra>Rescan Plugins from the menu, you can double check 
  168. your changes in Plugin Manager.

  170. Next time you start Photoshop, you will notice your changes.

  174. 8) FILTERS.INI
  175. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

  177. This file contains all plug-ins, the Plugin Manager can't recognize
  178. automatically. This is: all plug-ins NOT created using Filter Factory 
  179. (like AlienSkin, KPT, etc.).
  180. Please note: You can't move or rename plugins listed here - there
  181. is no save way to patch them. The only thing you can do is enable
  182. or disable this kind of plugins.

  184. If you find entries in the category [Unknown] in the Plugin Manager 
  185. main window, you have plugins not listed in filters.ini.
  186. You can edit the filters.ini file with any editor to add a name,
  187. category and description for this plugins.

  191. 9) Features:

  194. You can decompile Filter Factory plugins, which means, you can turn an 
  195. '.8bf' file into an '.afs' file that you can load into the editor of 
  196. the Photoshop Filter Factory.  The Filter Factory plugin is found on
  197. the Photoshop CD-ROM in the GOODIES directory, ffactory.8bf is the
  198. filename, just copy it to the plugins directory and it will load under
  199. Filters>Synthetic>Filter Factory. An additional '.txt' file is generated
  200. where you can find the original author, copyright, slider labels, etc.

  202. If you want, you can modify ALL properties of Filter Factory plugins
  203. from within Plugin Manager without having to start Photoshop a
